A remarkable work by Charles Nicolas Etienne Mayre, an academic painter born in Choisy le Roi near Paris in 1819. He studied with the masters Michel-Martin Drolling and Leon Cogniet.
Specialising in history and genre painting, he exhibited at the Salon between 1846 and 1850. The painting presented here dates from this period. In excellent condition, the oil on canvas, bearing on the versa a stamp from the colour merchant E Vernier, is signed at the lower right. Measuring 27 x 41 cm, the overall framed size in an antique Louis XV style frame is 45 x 57 cm (some wear and repair to the frame).
