This is exactly the type of scene which brought fame to Rosalbin de Buncey (1833-1891) : he was a master of the chiaroscuro in dark forest landscapes combined with bright clearings. in this respect, he can be compared to his peer and compatriot Narcisse Diaz de la Pena.
Marie-Abraham Rosalbin de Buncey was born in 1833 in Chatillon-sur-Marne. He studied at the cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Lon Cogniet and debuted at the Paris Salon in 1876. His works can be found in the collections of the museums of Chambry, Montpellier, Pontoise, Puy en Velay, Reims and Sceaux.
Our gorgeous "Babes in the Woods" is an oil painted on Mahogany panel measuring 27 x 35 cm and is signed "Rosalbin" at the lower left. It dates from circa 1880 and is presented in a period leaf gold frame. The overall framed size is 37 x 45 cm
