A luminous and atmospheric view of the French Riviera/Cote d'Azur coastline, with an interplay between clouds and waves that is is almost hypnotic. A boat with a red sail can be seen on the horizon.
Our painting dates from circa 1915-20, and is annotated Vidal on the verso. It may be ascribed to Gustave Vidal (1895-1966), an artist best known for his depictions of Provenal landscapes and harbour towns in the French Riviera. His thick impasto technique, applied with both palette knife and brush is sometimes reminiscent of Van Gogh, and was influenced by both Impressionism and the abstract work he came across while spending time in Paris. Born in 1895 in Vaucluse, France, the artist studied under Pierre Grivolas at the School of Fine Arts in Avignon, where he was encouraged to paint en plein air. Vidal mainly exhibited in Avignon and the Paris Salons.
An oil on canvas, the painting has been cleaned and restored. Measuring 33 x 46 cm, the overall size with its original frame is 42 x 55 cm.
