Manuel Barthold was born in Moscow in 1874, but his family emigrated to the United States when he was still a child. He was an American citizen although he would later obtain the French nationality. Like many American painters at the end of the nineteenth century, he moved to Paris. where he studied with Auguste Cormon and Jean-Paul Laurens.
Barthold won numerous prestigous prizes:, such as the Silver medal at the National Academy of Design in New York in 1894, the Gold medal at the Salons des Artistes Franais in 1904, thr Silver medal at the International Exhibition of Fine Arts in Liège, Belgium in 1905, and the Silver medal at the International Exhibition of 1910.
In Britain, he exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery Liverpool and at the Royal Academy.
Our gorgeous oil painting on canvas, measures 54 x 65 cm without its frame. The frame is a little fragile and in fair condition.
