A charming mid 19th Century drawing to which almost any dog owner will be able to relate. A dog is helping himself to an excellent lunch during a moment of distracting in the kitchen! While the maid is just arriving from the market, the lady of the house is deep in thought, with a letter on the table. There is definitely a story there!
Dating from circa 1850, and executed in graphite/pencil on paper, the drawing stylistically resembles the works of Alexandre Decamps (1803-1860), an artist well known for his fondness of dogs. The artwork is however unsigned.
Measuring 17 x 14 cm at sight, the overall size in a more recent frame are 39 x 31 cm.
